Sole Fitness SB700 Bike Review: There are better options

The Sole SB700 indoor cycle is a home quality spin bike. It is a top choice for serious spinners who can not afford the SB900 or prefer to ride a chain-driven spin bike with friction resistance rather than belt-driven bikes that come with magnetic resistance.

Although, SB700 was the very first indoor cycle by Sole, it was the result of years of research and manufacturing experience. So, it features a solid frame and is designed to run for many years. Back in the days, this bike was developed with the collaboration and feedback of trainers of some of the largest health clubs worldwide.

A hallmark of the Sole Fitness SB700 indoor cycle is its durability and two-millimeter oval steel tubing. Made of materials protected against corrosion with a resistance system that doesn’t wear, making it virtually maintenance-free.

This high-quality spin bike by Sole Fitness offers a computer for convenience and precision and a wide range of friction resistance. It’s available with a choice of two different frame colors.

Featuring a solid crank system designed to meet the demands of indoor cycling. With 48 pounds flywheel, you can experience the real cycling feel with the Sole Fitness SB700 spin bike.

Other highlights of sole fitness SB700 exercise bike include wireless heart rate monitoring, RPM and speed readings, seat and handlebar adjustment plus silicon wheels for easy transportation within the house.

All of these features, plus a three year part warranty and lifetime frame that backs the Sole SB700, puts this indoor among the top quality indoor bikes in its price category. In fact Sole offers the longest warranty in the industry for this price tag. Its online price of about $700 includes free shipping. Part by part, here’s our Sole SB700 review Indoor Cycle.

Sole Fitness SB700 Compared to Sole Fitness SB900

When comparing the Sole SB700 and its newer counterpart, the Sole SB900 spin bike, it’s essential to recognize the distinct differences between the two models that can influence your purchase decision.

Emergency Brake: The SB900 features an easy-to-reach lever designed specifically for the emergency brake, located right below the adjustment knob. In contrast, the SB700 uses the same adjustment knob for this purpose, potentially making it less accessible in urgent situations.

Adjustment Levers: The SB900 spin bike boasts longer adjustment levers located on the side of the bike, making it easier to reach. With the SB900, you can adjust the handlebars and the seat without having to dismount. The SB700, on the other hand, has shorter adjustment levers located beneath the handlebars and seat, which may require more time and effort for adjustments.

Flywheel Guard: The SB900 incorporates a robust flywheel guard that covers the flywheel, resistance system, and the entire frame to protect them from excessive sweat. In contrast, the SB700 features a smaller guard that offers limited protection against sweat. This becomes particularly crucial for a front flywheel setup like the Sole bikes have.

Weight Difference: The SB900 boasts a 20-pound heavier frame, which contributes to its sturdiness and durability.

Resistance System: The major difference here lies in the resistance system. The SB900 utilizes a powerful, silent, and maintenance-free magnetic resistance system, while the SB700 relies on friction/brake pad resistance, which tends to wear out and create noise over time. Magnetic resistance not only operates silently but also has a longer lifespan, making it a more attractive option for quiet and uninterrupted workouts.

Pedals: The SB900 comes with dual-sided toe cages and SPD pedals, providing more versatility. In contrast, the SB700 features single-sided toe cage pedals, but both bikes have standard threads, allowing you to swap in other pedal options if desired.

Q-Factor: The SB900 features an 8-inch Q-factor, whereas the Q-factor for the SB700 is not disclosed. The average Q-factor typically falls within the 6-8 inch range. A narrower Q-factor ensures better alignment of your hips, knees, and ankles, reducing pressure on your lower body joints.

Common Features: Both the SB700 and SB900 share several common features, including a quiet belt drive, wireless chest strap compatibility (not included), identical wireless consoles, transport wheels, similar warranty terms (Lifetime frame, 3 years parts, and 1 year labor), the same seats, height and weight capacity, handlebars, foot levelers, and dimensions.

In summary, the Sole SB900 presents notable improvements over the SB700, such as enhanced resistance technology, better access to emergency braking, and improved sweat protection. These differences, along with the shared features, should guide your choice when considering which Sole spin bike aligns better with your indoor cycling goals and preferences.

Sole SB700’s Comparable Alternatives to Consider

This is where every couple of months I log in to update the Sole SB700 review. My goal is to make sure you are aware of better value alternatives, if there is any.

Although, Sole SB700 indoor bike is a good quality model and better value than 90% of competitors, there are a couple of spin bikes under $1000 that can beat this bike in terms of features and price. So, with good conscious, I can’t tell you it’s the best value spin bike you can get for the price.

For example, in 2023, you can buy the Niceday indoor bike for the same price. This alternative has better features including magnetic resistance system, a better display with backlit and Bluetooth, and dumbbell holders.

Then there is the Echelon EX3 indoor bike which I think you should definitely consider this instead of the Sole Sb700 because it has an automatic magnetic resistance which is way superior to SB700’s manual friction resistance. Plus, it has dual-sided pedals which allow using regular shoes as well as specific indoor cycling SPD shoes for more efficiency. It is also one of the best magnetic spin bikes that often is available for as little as $400.

Everything said, if you prefer chain driven system because of its power efficiency, friction resistance because it gives the rider better control of the resistance, and heavy flywheel for extra high intensity cycling workouts, then Sole SB700 indoor cycling bike is your best bet. Remember that these characteristics (frictions resistance and chain driven system) require additional maintenance and make more noise.

  • Width: 21″
  • Length: 42″
  • Transport Wheels: Yes
  • Foot Levelers: Yes
  • Bike Weight: 140 Pounds
  • Max User Weight: 300 Pounds
  • User Inseam: 28″ to 40″
  • Shipping Weight: 150 Pounds

Featuring compact dimensions and large transport wheels, the SB700 by Sole Fitness is easy to store and move from one place to another place in the house.

The 2mm oval steel tubing frame and 140 pounds indicate how sturdy the SB700 Sole Fitness bike is. Unlike cheap indoor cycling bikes, this Sole indoor cycle has heavy stabilizers to prevent rocking during working.

Additionally, the Sole Fitness SB700 exercise bike has 4 adjustable foot levelers. They will help protect the floor and keep the bike stable on uneven surfaces.

But that is just a tiny part what this Sole exercise bike has to offer. The Sole SB 700 is light commercial which means it is more durable than home use spin bikes.

You can buy the Sole sb700 exercise bike for at home use or use in a light commercial setting such as office, hotel, etc. And as far as the inseam capacity goes, this Sole exercise bike adjusts for most users.

Sole SB700 Monitor:

Sole Fitness SB700 monitor
  • SB700 monitor displays the RPM, time, cal, HR, speed, and distance.
  • The monitor is compatible with non-coded wireless HR straps.
  • Sole Fitness SB700 monitor is not backlit.
  • Sole SB700 bike monitor is wireless.
  • Computer runs on AA batteries. (Included)

The SB700 console is compatible with wireless heart rate chest straps, allowing you to stay within target heart rate training zones as you workout. The strap is not included so you will need to buy it separately.

SB700 LCD monitor is not backlit which makes it a bit difficult to see and track your spinning workout stats. The monitor communicates with the RPM and Speed sensors wirelessly. So, there is no wire on the frame to create extra maintenance and it also helps the bikes look cleaner.

Note: While this Sole Fitness spin bike tracks many important cycling feedbacks, it does not track the watts. It also doesn’t have internal memory, Bluetooth or ANT/+ connectivity. Therefore, you can’t save daily workouts on the monitor or on spinning Apps.

However, there is an easy solution that enables you to save workout progress on the apps and also compete with other cyclists online. This simple solution includes a Wahoo sensor.

Pedals and Q-factor:

Sole SB700 indoor bike pedals
  • Sole spin bike SB700 has single side toe cage pedals.
  • Toe straps are adjustable.
  • The SB700 Q-factor is between 8″ – 8.2″.

Sole stationary bike SB700 features thick and solid crank arms and toe cage pedals. Unfortunately, the pedals are not SPD compatible which means if you want to use cycling shoes, you need to replace the pedals.

Thankfully, the Sole sb700 indoor bike has standard 9/16″ thread size. So, you can replace the SB700’s pedals with any of these clipless spin bike pedals.

The Q-factor, one of the most important features when buying indoor cycling bikes is not disclosed. But we believe it is anywhere from 8 inches to 8.2 inches which is acceptable.

In case you are new to indoor cycling, the q factor is the horizontal distance between the two pedals. Wide q factors tend to keep riders’ feet too far apart which can cause injuries if you have narrow hips.

Sole Fitness SB700 Flywheel:

Sole SB700 flywheel
  • Sole SB700 flywheel weighs 48 pounds.
  • It is a chrome-plated flywheel.
  • Flywheel has a protection guard.
  • SB700 bike has a fixed-wheel system.

The SB700 flywheel is well built with its weight at 48 pounds. This heavy-duty 48-pound chrome plated flywheel provide a smooth ride with a large range of challenges to meet the needs of most riders.

It is also chrome plated which makes it easy to clean and difficult to scratch. The polished steel flywheel and black and red coating frame match make it look great.

Just like any other indoor cycling exercise bike under $2000, the Sole Fitness SB700 exercise bike is fixed-wheel. Meaning the flywheel moves and stops with the pedals.

Freewheel bikes are more expensive. They work similarly to bicycles. Meaning even after you stop pedaling, the flywheel still turns. So, you can jump off the bike in case of an emergency or take a few seconds brakes whenever you want, without having to wait for the flywheel to stop.

SB700 Resistance System:

Sole SB700 bike resistance
  • Sole SB 700 bike has a friction resistance system.
  • The felt pad is made of heat resistance Kevlar material.
  • The SB700 Stationary Exercise Bike features knob adjustment.
  • Resistance system along with part of the flywheel have a sweat protection cover.
  • SB700’s resistance knob also functions as an emergency brake.

The SB700 stationary exercise bike from Sole Fitness has an unlimited resistance system. While it is not as quiet as a magnetic resistance bike, it provides more resistance.

Unlike magnetic bikes, it doesn’t have certain levels of resistance. Each knob turn provides a challenging workout to suit the needs of both indoor cyclists and mimics real road riding.

When buying Sole SB700 cycle, you don’t need to worry about the quality of the braking pads. They are made of Kevlar material which is known for heat-tolerance and providing a quiet and smooth ride.

There is also a small protection guard above the resistance to make sure the braking system stays dry. Overall, it is consistent, durable and quieter than some other cheap friction resistance bikes. Learn more about spin bike resistance.

Drive System:

  • Sole Fitness SB700 cycle is belt-driven.
  • It is quiet and requires little maintenance.
  • High-quality poly-V belt design.

If you have been reading this Sole sb700 exercise bike review, you already know this spin bike is belt-driven. But let’s see why it is better than chain drive bikes.

Belt system doesn’t have hundreds of tiny rings and pieces like the does. Therefore, it breaks harder and lasts longer. But that is not the only benefit of belt drive spin bikes.

Featuring belt makes the bike quieter and eliminates the need for oiling. And if the belt is high quality like the one on the SB700 bike, it doesn’t stretch. So, you don’t need to deal with adjustment tools every week. Learn more about spin bike transmission system.

Handlebars and Seat:

SB700 Seat handlebars
  • Offers multi-seat and handlebar adjustments
  • Sole SB700 Seat is 4-way adjustable.
  • The seat is cushioned and comfortable.
  • Handlebar also has up/down and fore/aft adjustment.
  • SB700 features cam and lever locking mechanism.

Designed for comfort, the SB700 features an adjustable seat and handlebars that move fore and aft as well as up and down so the majority of users can acquire a safe custom fit.

And the full adjustment is the reason that makes the SB700 spin bike by Sole Fitness can accommodate users from 5’2′ to 6’5″ tall. For extra comfort, there are also two easy to reach water bottle holders to allow you to stay hydrated during the exercise.

Featuring the cam and lever locking system is relatively easier to adjust compared to knob adjustment system. They also tighten nicely, so you don’t need to worry about the bike jostling during your indoor cycling workout.

The seat is soft and breathable with a cutout in the center to keep you cool during summer rides. So, when you buy Sole Fitness SB700 spin bike, you don’t necessarily need a seat cover or seat replacement.

SB700 Cycle Price and Warranty:

  • Sole SB700 price is around $800.
  • Sole Fitness SB700 residential and light commercial warranty:
  • All service is performed in-home
  • Parts/Electronics: Three years
  • Frame: Lifetime
  • Labor: One year

As far as the warranty goes, this quality piece of equipment features an excellent warranty. Built to last, the SB700 comes with a comprehensive warranty that covers the frame for life, the parts and electronics for three years, and covers one year of labor.

  • The Sole SB700 manual and assembly tools are included.
  • Sole SB700 assembly is very easy.
  • Sole SB700 shipping is free.
  • This bike ships in one box.
  • Expert assembly is not included.

The SB700 comes with free shipping and in one big heavy box. Therefore, we suggest you ask the carrier to help bring the bike inside or unbox the bike outside and bring inside in tow pieces.

The SB700 bike comes about 80% assembled, which is great in many ways. The remaining assembly is relatively straight-forward but still might take you about an hour.

The assembly manual is very easy to follow as long as you pay attention to detail and have little mechanical common sense. It is recommended to do the assembly with 2 people.

The parts that you need to assembly are leg stabilizers, pedals, seat, handlebars, and the computer. The flywheel, drive mechanism and crank arms come pre-assembled.

Sole Fitness SB700 pros:

Sole Fitness SB700 indoor cycling bike

RPM Reading Monitor
Sole SB 700 indoor cycling bike features a non-backlit console. It allows you to monitor your cadence when cycling indoors. Unlike cheap monitors, the numbers are displayed larger on the screen and easier to see your stats on the go.

Heart Rate
SB700 indoor exercise bike tracks your heart rate “HR”. Knowing your HR is important if your doctor advises you to stay within a certain HR range. Also looking at the heart rate, you can understand which exercise zone you are. For, example 100-120 beats per minute indicates you are in a health improvement zone while 120-150 beats per minute indicate you are in the fitness zone (fat burning zone).

  • With 48 pounds heavy flywheel the Sole SB700 provides a smooth ride and effectively mimics the feel of a road bike.
  • Featuring belt drive and Kevlar braking system help create a relatively quiet operation.
  • This unit has a 2mm steel tubing thick and durable frame for light commercial and home use.
  • SB700 cycle features easy assembly.
  • Convenient and easy to reach a dual water bottle holder.
  • 300 pounds user weight capacity.
  • Generous warranty and good customer services.
  • 4-Way adjustable handlebars provide a customized fit for all riders.
  • Breathable adjustable seat for comfort during longer rides.

Sole Fitness SB700 Cons:

Sole Fitness SB700 review

For this price tag, I was hoping the Sole cycling bike SB700 comes with dual-sided SPD compatible pedals. But unfortunately, the pedals have toe caged, only. So, if you want to use proper spinning shoes, you will need to replace the pedals. A pair of dual-sided Shimano compatible pedals cost around $40.

Frictions resistance
It creates noise and requires more maintenance than magnetic spin bikes. Because it comes in direct contact with the flywheel and wears out after a while. Note, sometimes serious outdoors biker and those who take their indoor exercise routine seriously prefer friction resistance because it offers unlimited resistance.

  • No Bluetooth or ANT/+ connectivity.
  • Monitor does not track the Watts.
  • Heart Rate chest strap is not included.
  • There is no media holder on the handles.
  • Flywheel protection guard doesn’t cover the whole flywheel.

8.1Expert Score
Durable But Outdated!

In my personal experience with the Sole SB700 exercise bike, I found it to be a reliable option for indoor cycling. It offers a smooth and effective workout, and the adjustability and heavy flywheel make it a solid choice. However, I’d like to mention that I personally prefer the Echelon EX3 due to its smarter resistance system. For more information make sure to read my review.
