Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1709 Review

Home > Sunny Health & Fitness > SF-B1709 Indoor Cycling Bike

Currently (2022) the Sunny Health and Fitness SF-B1709 is with no doubt the best spin bike from this brand under $600. It comes with several good features that we have not been able to find on any other budget spin bike on the market.

The focus of this spin bike is the ultra-quiet drive system, sturdy construction, ergonomic seat, and full handlebar adjustment. With relatively durable parts and overall built, SF-B1709 is perfect for home use (if you can’t afford to spend more than $600).

Unlike many other Sunny spin bikes that often came with a heavy flywheel, the SF-B1709 has a lightweight flywheel (7-lb). But it is not a deal-breaker because this indoor cycle has a high-gear ratio. So, you would still get a natural smooth ride with Sunny Health and Fitness SF-B1709 spin bike despite its lightweight flywheel.

To learn more about the flywheel and gear ratio, make sure to scroll down this SF-B1709 review and read the “flywheel” section. But if you want to know everything this indoor cycle offers, stick with us and keep reading. A few other noteworthy specs of SF-B17709 indoor cycle include an ergonomic frame and full adjustment capacity which helps to accommodate short, average and tall riders (28″-39″ inseam).

It is designed to guarantee a smooth, extremely quiet and natural feeling pedal stroke with the high gear ratio. As far as the cost goes, this spin bike is a small investment, compared to what it similar bike the benefits it offers.

From a multifunctional digital display that records speed, cadence/RPM, distance, calories, heart rate, and time to SPD pedals that can accommodate all user feet and shoe types (two-bolt SPD and regular athletic shoes). This top-rated magnetic indoor cycling bike is designed to be unmatched in terms of specs and price.

Important Note:
This is where I usually update the Sunny Health and Fitness SF-B1709 review to let you know if it is still a good value on the market. This bike is currently (2022) a great buy.

A few features that you wouldn’t be able to find in other similarly priced top spin bikes include the SPD pedal, RPM reading, belt-transmission, horizontal/vertical adjustable drop handlebars, and even more importantly, the magnetic resistance system.

Except for this Sunny SF-B1709 indoor cycle, there is no spin bike on the market under $600 that comes with the combination of below-listed features. However, if you can afford to spend $150 extra, I suggest you consider the ASUNA 7150 cycle. It is a more solid bike with a commercial-quality structure.

To make it easy for you to navigate through this Sunny SF-B1709 Indoor Cycling Bike review, I have created the table content below. Click on the part that you want to learn about or read the full review for a better understanding of what you are paying for.

Technical Information:

SF-B1709 Specs:

  • Height: 54.3″
  • Width: 23.6″
  • Length: 53.2″
  • Bike Weight: 93.4 Pounds
  • Max User Weight: 300 Pounds
  • Inseam Capacity: 28″ to 39″
  • Shipping Weight: 103 Pounds
  • Transport Wheels: Yes
  • Adjustable Base Levelers: Yes
  • Water Bottle Holder: Yes,
  • Power Requirement: 2 AAA batteries (included)

The Sunny Health & Fitness indoor cycling bike SF-B1709 is a relatively larger bike compared to a few other magnetic spin bikes. But it is lightweight and has two well built durable ball bearing transport wheels. So, it is easy to move the bike and store it after use in case you don’t have a permanent place for the bike.

Additionally, this Sunny exercise bike features floor adjuting levelers. So, you can adjust them to have a solid and more comfortable workout even if your floor is not perfectly leveled. The levelers also prevent scratches on the floor.

Weighing 93 pounds, this Sunny spin bike has a sturdy steel frame with dual coat paint to prevent rust and corrosion. The 300 pounds user weight capacity proves the sturdiness of this Sunny Health exercise bike.

In terms of inseam capacity, the SF-B1709 indoor cycling bike can accommodate pretty much all users. Thanks to its high range of seat and handlebars adjustment, the riders from 5′ to 6’7″ can use the bike.

There is also one convenient water bottle holder on the handlebar to stay hydrated during the ride. When buying the SF B1709 indoor cycling bike, keep in mind that it comes in one box and you might need help bringing the bike in the house. You will read more about shipping and assembly down below.

Dunny SF-B1709 Monitor:

  • The SFB1709 comes with the monitor
  • It is not a backlit monitor.
  • The monitor runs on 2 AAA batteries (included).
  • You can track the current, average, and max of time, RPM, calories, distance, speed, and heart rate.
  • SFB109 cycle uses pulse sensors to read your heart rate (not compatible with wireless chest straps).
  • This monitor does not have Bluetooth or ANT/+ connectivity.
  • The monitor doesn’t include internal memory, preset workout, watt/power or resistance level tracking capacity.

The Sunny SFB1709 cycle includes a non-backlit console. It is a pretty basic choice with intuitive functionality and a sleek design equipped with RPM recording.

It tracks your Speed, Time, Distance, Calories, Heart Rate, and Cadence (RPM). But it does not track the Watts or resistance level. And to monitor your heart rate, you will need to place your hands on the pulse sensors.

The time, distance, and calorie goals can be set to countdown. There is also the Quickstart button that will reset all values to count up from zero. Note that the SF B1709 exercise bike by Sunny doesn’t have the Bluetooth or ANT/+ connectivity.

So, if you want interactive workouts and real-time tracking with Bluetooth connectivity on cycling apps, you will need to either buy a pair of power meter pedals (expensive) or a Wahoo sensor (cheap).

If you decide to buy Power Pedals, you can use your tablet/phone instead of the bike’s monitor. The pedals have Bluetooth and ANT/+ connectivity and can provide all your cycling information, including Watts and RPM right on your tablet/phone and other smart devices.

The Wahoo sensors are a cheap alternative option if you want to save your daily workout and connect the bike to cycling apps. Read our spin bike computer options to learn more about the Wahoo sensors.

Pedal and Q-Factor:

  • SF-B1709 Q-factor size is 203 mm.
  • It has aluminum alloy dual-sided pedals with toe cage and SPD compatible side.
  • Sunny SF-B1709 indoor bike has a three-piece steel crank arms.
  • And 9/16″ universal pedal thread size.

When buying the Sunny indoor cycling stationary bike SF B1709, you will receive spd compatible pedals (2-bolt) which is very rare for this price class. But since the bike uses the standard 9/16 thread, you can also replace them with your favorite SPD-SL (3-bolt) pedals.

In case you are new to the cycling world, the SPD pedals (2 and 3 bolts) allow you to use specific cycling shoes for a safer, more efficient and comfortable ride. Often, you have to buy these pedals separately but thankfully the Sunny Health and Fitness SF B1709 spin bike comes equipped with them so you can save $50-$80 on pedals.

Regarding the q-factor, the SF-B1709 is not really ideal for very lightweight users that have narrow hips. In other words, the 203 MM q-factor is considered okay as long as you normally keep your feet 8″ apart when standing.

Here is a short description of the q-factor in case you are new to indoor cycling: The Lateral distance between the two pedal is called q-factor. When there is too much distance between the pedals (wide q factors), your ankles, knees, and hips can not stay aligned together. And that can bring excessive pressure on your lower body joints, especially knees.

SFB1709 Bike Flywheel:

  • The Sunny SFB109 bike’s flywheel weighs 7 pounds.
  • This bike features a balanced flywheel.
  • SF-B1709 incorporates guards that ward off sweat from flywheel and magnets.
  • It is a fixed-gear bidirectional flywheel.
  • SFB1709 Gear ratio is 1:9.

This indoor cycling bike uses a similar concept to Keiser M Series bikes (light flywheel and high-gear ratio). Some companies do this by combining a large pulley belt with a small press-down pulley and a light flywheel.

The main benefit of this system is low bearing-maintenance. Because there is very little pressure/weight on the bearings (instead of 50-lb there is 7-lb), they can last years before you would need to replace them. Additionally, the overall weight remains light so it is easy to move the bike in the house.

So, there is nothing worry when it comes to the weight of the flywheel when it comes to SF-B1709. Thanks to the combination of magnetic resistance, a high-gear ratio (big and small pulleys), the Sunny Fitness Bike 1709 can provide a smooth and 360 consistent pedal stroke.

In case you are wondering what is the gear ratio, here is a short description. The number of times the flywheel turns for every turn of the pedals dictates the gear ratio. For this bike, the flywheel turns 9 times for every complete turn of the pedals. It is considered a high-gear ratio which is fast and feels more like road bikes when you start pedaling.

This cycle comes with the fixed-gear drive mechanism which means you can pedal forward and reverse to stimulate different muscle groups on the legs.

To minimize the noise and to eliminate the need for dealing with broken bearings, the flywheel of this bike turns on high quality sealed bearings.

The flywheel itself is made of high-quality materials. It is resistance to stains and rust which prolongs the life of the flywheel and makes the flywheel maintenance easy.

In general, when the flywheel is located in the back of the bike, I don’t criticize it because it is not below the sweat zone. But SF-B1709 went one step further and added a leak-proof durable guard that stops the sweat from reaching the flywheel, bearings, and magnets.

SF-B1709 Resistance System:

  • B1709 Sunny Fitness bike has a magnetic resistance system.
  • It has a micro-adjust resistance lever with an emergency safety stop.
  • Resistance adjustment lever does not have numbers but for every resistance level, there is a click.
  • There are 13 resistance levels to choose from.

If you have been reading this Sunny SF-B1709 indoor bike review, you already know it comes with a magnetic resistance system. But you may not know the pros of the magnetic system.

The magnetic, Eddy Current resistance controlled via micro-adjust Knob reacts instantly to the increase and decrease of the user’s demand without causing friction or noise.

Unlike felt pad and leather pad friction resistance bikes, the SFB1709 magnetic resistance does not come in contact with the flywheel. It simply gets close and far from the flywheel in order to add or cut resistance.

Therefore, the operation is silent so you can do your indoor cycling workout early morning or evenings when your partner and neighbors are resting. The only problem that I can see with the SF-B1709 cycle is that the bike does not show the current resistance level on the monitor. So, you will need to use the bike for a bit to learn your average, max, etc.

There are 13 settings for magnetic resistance. You can start at the top and count the number of clicks. You can figure 6 or 7 clicks are approximately halfway or 50%. You can work out the number of clicks you need based on the 13 settings x the percentage you are looking for.

Belt-Drive Transmission:

  • Sunny SF-B1709 has a direct single belt-driven system.
  • The belt is reinforced high-quality.
  • It doesn’t require oiling and frequent adjustment.

Every Sunny SF-B1709 reviews on the web say this bike is extremely quiet and here is the reason. This indoor exercise bike by Sunny features the whisper-quiet technology which is the combination of belt, magnetic resistance, and sealed bearings.

The result of all these high-quality well-thought engineering is the smooth, near to silent and maintenance-free ride that you would enjoy with SFB1709 spin bike.

Additionally, the belt drivetrain does not require oiling as the chain does and since there is no oil involved, there is very little to clean.

Note: These days even spin bikes under $150 feature belt drive but what most bikes don’t have, is the quality of the belt. They use cheap belts which tend to stretch after a couple of months of use.

Again, when you buy the Sunny indoor cycling bike SF B1709, you don’t need to worry about this common issue. Because the company uses the maintenance-free high-grade reinforced belts.

Handlebars and Seat:

  • Sunny B1709 cycle has 4-way adjustable handlebars.
  • The seat also features infinite fore and aft adjustments.
  • This spin bike features durable corrosion resistance seat and handlebar posts (not aluminum though).
  • SF-B1709 multi-grip handlebars include Drops, Aero, Cross, and Bull-Horn grip positions.
  • The seat is cushioned and padded but it is not a racing-style performance seat.

Searching on the web, I can tell you that the riders really appreciate the attention to biomechanics in the seat and adjustable handlebars. The SF-B1709 handlebars adjust horizontally and vertically to provide a safe comfortable position for the riders.

But the adjustment is only part of what I like about this Sunny Fitness cycle. This bike offers several handgrips so you can change your wrist position regularly and relieve stress points on your hands. And also change the muscles you’re using in your arms, shoulders, and back.

This spin bike by Sunny also comes with a relatively comfortable seat. It can minimize friction while offering a good deal of support. But if you have very narrow hips, I suggest you replace the seat with a narrower spin bike seat for a more comfortable (less friction) workout.

Note: This indoor cycling bike doesn’t have a device holder to keep your tablet/phone safely on the bike during your spin exercise. But it is possible to buy a separate bike phone mount and attach it to the right or left side of the handlebars.

SFB1709 Cycle Price and Warranty:

  • SFB1709’s original price is $750 but sometimes depending on the offers if you are lucky, you can also buy it for less than $480.
  • This exercise bike’s home use warranty includes:
  • 3-Year structural frame.
  • 180 days on parts and components.
  • If you need parts for this bike while still under warranty, visit the “https://sunnyhealthfitness.com/contact/contact-warranty/” and fill the form to order the part.
  • But if your cycle is no longer under warranty and you need parts, you have to visit the “https://sunnyhealthfitness.com/contact/contact-us-parts/” to fill a different form.

Unless you find the Sunny SF-B1709 discounted, the price is not less than $750. Sometimes the Sunny Health and Fitness also puts this magnetic cycle on offer.

But it does not happen too often as this cycle is considered well-priced for its features and quality. As for the warranty, it is not impressive. But that is normal with Sunny bikes.

In fact, the SF-B1709 cycle has better warranty terms compared to most bikes from this brand because it is a newer model with a sturdier structure.

Where to buy the Sunny indoor cycle SF-B1709? This brand sells its products on Amazon so you will be dealing directly with the company even though purchasing on Amazon.

Shipping and Assembly:

  • Sunny SF-B1709 shipping is free in the United States.
  • The Sunny SF-B1709 assembly tools come with the bike.
  • A hard copy of the SF-B1709 manual comes with the bike as well.
  • It comes partially assembled and it is fairly easy to assemble.
  • This bike ships in one box that weighs 103 pounds.
  • Shipping box dimensions: 48.4″ L x 9.8″ W x 29.9″ H

Before jumping into pros and cons, one last thing I am going to talk about in this Sunny Health and Fitness SF-B1709 indoor cycling bike review is the assembly and shipping. This bike comes partially assembled and pretty much anyone should be able to do the rest.

Because most significant assembly work is done for you, however, there are still a number of things to put together. You will have to assemble the front and rear stands, pedals, handlebars, monitor, and seat.

The SFB1709 indoor cycle is relatively a lightweight bike, but you still may want to ask to deliver it inside your house and have someone to help you with the stabilizer assembly.

The size of the q factor for the Sunny SF-B1709 indoor cycling bike is 203 mm which can cause stress on the knees for the users with very narrow hips.

  • Short warranty (180-days);
  • There is no media shelf to keep your device (tablet, phone, etc) on the bike;
  • Steel seat and handlebar posts (not aluminum) make it heavy and relatively difficult to adjust;
  • Not compatible with wireless chest straps for heart rate tracking;
  • No capacity to save daily spinning workout progress;
  • No watt or resistance level tracking capability;
