When it comes to choosing between different types of exercise bikes, there are several factors to consider. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of each option.
If comfort is your top priority because you are elderly or someone with back issues or just recovering from surgery, then recumbent exercise bikes are the best choice. These bikes have large seats and backrests which makes them the most comfortable exercise bike available, especially the ones like Nautilus R618 with larger seats and a step-through frame.
Upright exercise bikes are a close second when it comes to comfort, as they provide a comfortable upright seating position with larger seats than spin and air bikes. Air bikes are a bit less comfortable and require leaning forward, while spin bikes are the least comfortable of the four options due to their smaller seats, leaning design, and heavy flywheels. So, it’s fair to say recumbent and uprights bikes are the most comfortable of all exercise bikes but what makes upright bikes more appealing is their compact dimensions. They take up less floor space than recumbent exercise bikes, especially if you end up buying a folding upright bike.
For those looking to burn calories and get quick weight loss results, spin bikes and air bikes are the most effective. I can’t tell you exactly how many calories you can burn on any of these exercise bikes because there are several factors like age, diet, fitness, and metabolism.
However, as a reference, I can say spin bikes can burn up to 800 calories per hour, while air bikes can burn up to 900 calories per hour. Upright bikes come in third place with up to 500 calories burned per hour, and recumbent bikes burn up to 400 calories per hour. Because of the fact that you can engage fewer muscles on an upright stationary bike and a recumbent bike, you burn fewer calories.
For high-intensity interval training (HIIT), air exercise bikes and spin bikes are choices compared to recumbent and upright exercise bikes. You can do really intense workouts and push yourself to the limit. You can also do HIIT on upright and recumbent exercise bikes but they are simply not ideal for HIIT because they are intended for less intense exercise.
As for full-body muscle engagement, air bikes are without any doubt the best option among all exercise bikes. They are the only type of exercise bike that has moving handlebars so you can work out your upper body at the same time as your lower body. Spin bikes don’t target as many muscle groups as air bikes but they take second place when it comes to engaging multiple muscles because they allow you to engage your full body when you get out of the seat. Upright and recumbent bikes mainly work out the leg muscles, with upright bikes doing a slightly better job at engaging the glutes, thighs, and calves.
Overall upright bikes are the most popular option among exercise bikes and that’s why you can find them in pretty much any gym that you enter. They provide a low-impact cardiovascular workout and are perfect for anyone, especially senior users. The seats and the rest of the bike are designed for comfort during long periods of cardio exercise. You can easily spend 30-50 minutes burning calories on an upright bike while doing something else, like watching TV.

RENPHO AI-Powered Upright Exercise Bike
A relatively new brand, the Renpho has recently released a high-quality indoor stationary bike. Although this Renpho upright bike doesn’t have flashy bells and whistles such as a screen, sound system, or cooling fan, it does come with Bluetooth wireless connection technology to synch data with the Renpho (free for ios and Android) Zwift, Kinomap, and several other indoor cycling applications.
Featuring a 4-way adjustable seat, you can set up the bike for short and tall users by simply adjusting the seat fore/aft up/down. The seat is well-cushioned, has a center cutout for airflow, and is primarily designed for high performance with less friction compared to wider seats that you would find on Precor and a few other upright bikes.
Like every other upright exercise bike, the handlebars are only horizontally adjustable and you shouldn’t have any problem fitting the bike because of the fact that you will use this bike mainly in an upright position (not leaning road bike racing style.) Unfortunately, there are no pulse sensors built into the handlebars to allow you to monitor your heart rate. But the good news is that the company will be released a smartwatch in mid-2022 that will be able to sync with the Renpho app. So, you will be able to see your heart rate along with other cycling feedback from the screen of your phone on the Renpho application.

This indoor bike comes with a dual backlit LCD screen to help you track your workout data, and you can watch or read through your own device on the top rack while still being able to see the necessary data of your workout in the screen below.

Circuit Fitness Exercise Upright Bike
The Circuit Fitness upright bike is not as good ad the Nautilus U616 and lacks in few useful features compared to U616. All the differences are mentioned below! Circuit Fitness exercise home bike comes with a smaller backlit display which makes it a bit difficult to view the workout values during the exercise.
There are 15 preset programs including heart rate and fitness test programs. There are 32 magnetic resistance levels which is great but there is no user profiles to allow you to save your workout progress and customized programs on the bike. This bike doesn’t have Bluetooth connection capabilities. So, you can directly connect to the apps.
The saddle is a little hard and mid-sized with only up and down adjustments. It means not everyone can find the perfect cycling position on this indoor upright bike. If you decide to buy this upright bike, buy a gel/pad for the seat too as it’s a bit hard.
The price of Circuit Fitness is below $350 at the time of writing the review while the U616 is almost $700. So, if you don’t care about the bells and whistles that we mentioned, this upright bike makes a good cardio machine for you. The single track LCD display allows you to keep your tablet on the console while still being able to track the progress of your workout.
The 3-speed cooling fan prevents you from overheating and keeps you fresh, the built-in speakers through an MP3 input connect to your device and let you listen to your favorite music during the workout.
The handlebar is angle adjustable with built-in heart rate sensors but it doesn’t have an armrest. Your media shelf is well-designed to keep your tablet/phone secure while you are pedaling. The lightweight, transport wheels and compact size of this cardio machine make it one of the best upright exercise bikes for home use.
The flywheel weight is not available but looking at the user weight capacity, it’s not more than 20 lbs. For smoother and quieter operation this upright indoor bike also has a maintenance-free belt drive.
What is Circuit Fitness upright bike lacking in compared to U616? The seat is smaller, and harder, it doesn’t have wireless connectivity (Bluetooth), the LCD is not as clear, it has 15 total programs (not 29), and its saddle and pedals are not oversized (not as comfortable, especially for heavier users). Circuit Fitness upright bike also doesn’t feature armrests while the U616 does.
Schwinn 130 Upright Exercise Bike (My16)
Before going into details, note that the Schwinn My16 bike and Nautilus U614 are the same bikes from different brands. Also, notice that we are talking about Schwinn 130 MY20 (Model Year 2020) and NOT Schwinn My17 130 because they have different features.
The MY17 130 version offers an upgraded and backlit display that has Bluetooth capability while the MY20 offers a non-backlit display without Bluetooth connection capability. The MY20 130 upright exercise bike features 20 magnetic resistance levels that can be challenging for entry and intermediate-level users.
There are 22 total workout programs on this exercise bike. 2 LCD displays to track your data, the upper display also functions as a rack for your device. A comfortable Padded contoured seat (only 2-way adjustable) and angle adjustable handlebar.
The 3-speed fan prevents you from overheating, USB for charging and data transfer, with built-in speakers so you can listen to your favorite music. There are also 2-user profiles so you and your partner can enter your names, age, weight, and height to record all your workout progress.
The water bottle holder and transport wheels are included. Schwinn MY20 130 upright exercise bike is affordable and has all the basic features an indoor cyclist might need, plus it’s very much home-friendly with 58-lb weight and a 41-inch length. Compared to many bikes in the market, it’s a very quiet upright bike.
What I don’t like about Schwinn 130 upright exercise bike is the seat adjustability and the NON-backlit display because sometimes I like to work out in the room with the lights off and it would be impossible to see the data on the screen without backlit.
However, I would totally recommend this budget indoor upright bike for personal home use for those who don’t care about the lack of bells and whistles. Schwinn 130 is listed among the best upright exercise bikes for entry levels trainees, but not for gyms as it’s not durable for club heavy duty.
Schwinn 130 indoor bike doesn’t feature Bluetooth connection capability. Therefore, you won’t be able to directly connect to the apps on the web. However, it has a USB port for charging devices and data transferability.
You can put the metrics of your workout into the memory stick and upload them to Schwinn Connect and MyFitnessPal Apps through your computer. Overall the Schwinn 130 upright exercise bike is an excellent budget indoor bike that can provide a good upright workout.
Marcy ME-708 Upright Exercise Bike
2 used from $113.26
In the most upright bike reviews, you will find this compact exercise bike because of its budget price point. For the same reason, this Marcy bike takes the last place in our top indoor upright exercise bike reviews. A reputable name in the budget home/gym equipment and this super compact home-friendly budget upright bike has made it to many “Top 10 best upright exercise bikes” lists.
It’s easy to assemble, it’s only 43-lb and comes with transport wheels. Therefore, anyone in the family can use and store it after the workout. It takes very little floor space as well which makes it even more suitable for individuals living in smaller apartments. This portable upright bike comes with 8 magnetic resistance levels that make it smooth and quiet to use indoors even if you have thin walls in your apartment.
Resistance adjustment is done manually through a knob and it’s not as easy as changing resistance electronically. The comfy seat and pedals are other good features of this budget bike. However, the seat is only 2-way adjustable which means not all users can find the perfect biking position.
Marcy upright bike also has LCD screen although it isn’t backlit so you can’t see the progress of your workout in the dark. In the console, you can see your workout values such as Time, distance, speed and burned calories which are usually sufficient for non-advanced trainers.
We recommended it to friends and they have been using it for a year and never had a problem with it, except that they say the seat is uncomfortable for a long-time workout. The marcy upright indoor cycle doesn’t feature the bells and whistles available on the other 9 machines in this indoor bike review. Features missing on this bike are the speaker, blue backlit display, MP3 input, Bluetooth connection, preset programs, chest strap compatibility etc.
Information about the flywheel is not available but the bike offers a pretty smooth ride. The frame is also durable and can take user weight up to 300 lbs. To run the LCD you require to have two AAA batteries which aren’t included.
Overall it’s a good bike and for this price, I wouldn’t expect anything more, it’s already a great value for the money. In some of the upright exercise bike reviews, you might find this small exercise bike ranked higher and suggested for everyone. However, we don’t recommend it for heavyweight users.
