Editor’s Magnetic Exercise Bike Choice in the UK

Adidas C21x indoor bike
Adidas C21x indoor bike

I got this model for less than £600, yet, it came with features that are only available on magnetic spin bikes above £1000. It’s much better than the C12 and offers a pretty decent indoor cycling workout.

There are 8 levels of manually adjustable magnetic resistance which I found sufficient for all my indoor cycling rides. I like that its flywheel is fully enclosed and safely hidden from my kid who often plays and runs around the bike.

Aside from the price, what really sets this one apart from the other bikes I tried is its ergonomic built. From dipped elbow rests to fully customisable handlebars and seat to a 175mm q-factor, it has it all for a comfortable spinning bike exercise.

Featured first in our magnetic resistance spin bike reviews and comparisons in the United Kingdom, the Life Fitness IC7 spin bike brings professionalism, power, and precision to the spin experience in a sleek and user-friendly format.

The efficient, ergonomic, and high-quality offering from the illustrious Life Fitness IC7 streamlines the spin experience and adds innovation after innovation into its design process to create one of the best magnetic spin bikes in Great Britain from the higher-end Life Fitness brand.

Spinners, cyclers, and fitness enthusiasts will all love the versatility and high performance of this quality studio bike. Priced at just over 2000 Pounds, this compact bike provides quality performance and would not let you down.

Built with a rear-mounted child-safe flywheel that pairs seamlessly with an industrial magnetic resistance while maintaining the same powerful drive of an outdoor bike, the Life Fitness IC7 magnetic indoor cycling bike in the UK provides an effortless push and intense spin for maximum workout progress.

The included fitness console is self-powered, so you’re not bound by a plug or electrical outlet, and the LCD screen offers streamlined feedback for every ride. The direct power measurements achieved through fitness tracking built into the cycle include watt, resistance level, cadence, speed, distance and time cycled, heart rate, and calories burned.

You can set specific goals for your workout based on the calories you’d like to burn or the time you’d like to cycle. Additionally, the blue backlit monitor is equipped with Life Fitness’s Coach By Color technology to help you stay on top of your goals and reach them quickly. It also has the Bluetooth ANT+ technology for you to ride bike on cycling apps.

The flywheel is made up of an intense yet lightweight resistance system that provides easy, smooth starting and stopping driven by silent magnetic discs that build tough resistance levels that are easily adjusted through a resistance knob.

The fixed rear flywheel works to generate internal traction that propels the pedals forward as you push, meaning you work hard with every stride to earn a good workout. The silent Carbon Blue belt transmission also works in tandem with the flywheel to create a smooth, comfortable ride that you can customize without feeling like you have to jerk or push on the bike.

Comfort and personalization are easy with the Life Fitness IC7 height and latitudinal adjustments. The cycle itself is fairly compact, but you can easily move the seat and handlebars in order to meet your specific needs, thanks to its “Gas Assisted” technology. The pedals power you through a truly intense workout, with a standout q-factor of 155mm that creates ergonomic drive that doesn’t strain the body. They also feature SPD compatibility and double-sided toe cages for versatile use.

Positive
  • Powerful magnetic flywheel, smooth Carbon Blue (Toothed/Timing) belt transmission, SPD pedals, Coach By Color monitor, Self-powered technology, direct/accurate watt, RPM, speed, and resistance reading, Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity, child-safe shrouded design.
Negatives
  • Expensive, the monitor doesn’t send data to many cycling applications without additional accessories (ANT+ bridge), Life Fitness support is not the greatest.

Nordic Track S22i Indoor Studio Exercise Bike

It’s the improved version with pivoting screen and a smoother incline/decline system
 out of stock

as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

Touted as “the culmination of over a decade of refinement”, the Nordictrack S22i represents one of the most specialized and highly developed magnetic indoor cycling bikes in the UK market. Designed in the United States, every inch of space on this bike is maximized to the fullest, providing an accurate, aerodynamic, and ergonomic indoor cycle experience that’s unrivaled by any other machine on the market today.

The S22i offers top-quality technological components that boost the overall feedback and performance of your bike. The included 22″ touchscreen monitor tracks cadence, power, calories, heart rate, distance, gear, and more, and it’s compatible with Bluetooth connectivity so you can use the one-year free included iFit membership (worths $400) to build in training equipment.

Weighing just over 80 kgs, this magnetic resistance indoor spin bike in the UK is fairly heavyweight and can’t be easily set up or moved by just about anyone. But what really stands out about this high-performing indoor bike is its incline/decline systems that mimic the uphill/downhill of the terrain. The high-inertia 15 kg flywheel is fixed-gear and bidirectional, pairing with the sleek belt transmission to create a quiet 24 level electromagnetic resistance that’s virtually silent but incredibly powerful.

The S22i is also completely adjustable and personalizable. Two-way adjustable handlebars and seats mean this spin bike with magnetic resistance in the UK can fit a wide range of users and is easily shaped to almost any need. Its 150 kgs weight limit and sturdy frame ensure longevity.

One of the true standouts of this magnetic exercise bike in Britain, however, is the narrow q-factor of 150mm that helps to create an ergonomic drive that will appeal to every type of rider and accommodates a versatile workout routine.

Priced at 1,999 British Pounds (the S22i model), this is no cheap bike, but your investment will last a long time and is warranty-protected for maximum use and versatility, making it an ideal bike for any rider willing to commit to a good spin.

Positive
  • Powerful, 22″ HD touch monitor, Bluetooth, HDMI, USB charging, speakers, fan, good warranty, incline and decline settings, versatile, high-performing, and 1-year iFit membership.
Negatives
  • Expensive, the monitor doesn’t send stats to some cycling apps of the popular applications including Zwift and Peloton. Also, after a year you need to renew the subscription if you want iFit access.

Sportstech SX600 Elite Indoor Cycle Bike

It has an HD touchscreen with elbow rests and magnetic resistance

as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

My personal favourite magnetic indoor bike in the UK, a top-of-the-market technological advancement in both fitness tracking innovations and spin performance, the Sportstech SX600 Elite is a sleek and modernized spin bike like no other.

With total technological integration from everything to the electromagnetic resistance to the Android console that can project onto televisions and other devices, Sportstech Elite is one of many spin cycles to take the benefits of technology to the next level in order to create modernized fitness equipment that maximizes power, speed, and utility. As such, the technological components of this magnetic resistance indoor cycling bike in the UK are unrivaled by any other and set the standard for companies everywhere.

Among the top-quality technological components of Sportstech Elite is the Android console and display that offer both simulation and competition modes as well as pre-programmed workouts that you can follow along with right on your bike.

The included performance monitor also tracks cadence through hand pulse sensors and is compatible with the included pulse belt. You can also see your power, calories, heart rate, distance, resistance selections, and more.

The bike is compatible with Kinomap, Fitshow, and the included fitness app, so you can track and project workout statistics to your connected fitness apps with ease. The star of the show here is the high-performing balanced flywheel. Weighing 26kg, this electromagnetic resistance flywheel offers 32 resistance levels that are all instantly computer controlled, making switching resistance levels easier than ever before.

The powerful flywheel is fixed-gear, bidirectional, and rear-mounted pairing with the sleek belt transmission to create a quiet magnetic resistance that’s virtually silent but incredibly powerful. The positioning of the flywheel also protects it from sweat, wear, and tear, making it even more durable and lasting.

The Sportstech Elite offers versatility and functionality on every level. The three-in-one padded sports handlebar creates multiple positioning options, so you can stand or hold them however you need to in order to best finish your workout.

The padded and comfortable sport saddle is adjustable, making it even easier for this indoor cycling bike with magnetic resistance in the UK to adapt to any size rider. Universal pedals offer an average q-factor but SPD cleat connectors and platform style, so you can use either specialized spin shoes or plain-soled athletic shoes on your rides.

This bike is near the upper range of mid-priced spin bikes at around 1000 British Pound, but its technological advances set it well apart from other competitors and make it a worthwhile value for people looking for competitive and built-in spin workouts without sacrificing their individual ability to create workouts.

Positive
  • Fair price, high-tech video screen and coaching, powerful electromagnetic resistance, rear-mounted child-safe heavy flywheel, SPD pedals, fully customisable seat and handlebars, and elbow-rests.
Negatives
  • Doesn’t accommodate users below 5’5″ tall, and the bikes doesn’t connect to popular cycling apps such as Zwift unless used with the QZ app.

Peloton Original Indoor Exercise Bike

Magnetic resistance with 1 month of Peloton app membership
 out of stock
Amazon.co.uk
as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

The Peloton Original Indoor Spin Bike is one of the best budget spin bikes in the UK. This streamlined spin bike provides a straightforward yet quality spin experience for beginning spinners and outdoor cyclists looking for a steady way to train indoors. At £1100, this is one of the more expensive magnetic indoor bikes available in its class, but the brand ensures you get value in quality and performance.

The standout feature of this bike is its straightforward, user-friendly performance. Built with a lightweight yet hardworking 13kg front-mounted flywheel and a low-maintenance belt drive transmission, this magnetic indoor cycle creates a natural cycling experience that’s silent and smooth.

Similar to other top-quality magnetic resistance systems, this cycle is controlled by a micro-adjustable resistance knob that increases or decreases magnetic drag with each rotation, while the no contact braking power of decreased drag means there are no loud and clunky gear shifts or jerky braking.

The built-in fitness monitor on this bike tracks seven functions, including pulse, RPM, watt, speed, resistance level, distance, time cycled, heart rate, and calories burned. However, there’s no ANT+ connectivity so you can’t connect the bike to Zwift unless you buy an SS2K V3 which will make the Peloton to cast in Bluetooth FTMS and also enables the auto-resistance.

Overall, this magnetic indoor cycle in the UK is an awesome, hardworking, at-home piece of equipment that’s as functional as it is easy to use. The frame is sturdy and the bike is solidly built, meaning you can trust this cycle to perform at a high degree for many years to come no matter how much you use it.

The Peloton Original magnetic indoor bike in the UK offers a few different handlebar grip positions and is height and fore/aft adjustable for the seat and height adjustable for the handlebars, creating even more variety for riders. The pedals are not SPD, but they are Look Delta which is more comfortable because the touching point is bigger than MTB/SPD pedals.

Positive
  • Magnetic resistance, great quality, belt transmission, narrow q-factor.
  • 22-inch touchscreen monitor.
  • Smooth and quiet pedalling motion.
  • Look Delta pedals to clip in cycling shoes.
Negatives
  • No Bluetooth FTMS or ANT+ connectivity to sync with non-Peloton apps.
  • No horizontal adjustment on the handlebars.
  • No automatic resistance on the apps.

Adidas C-12x Indoor Cycling Exercise Bike

The latest model by Adidas with 8 levels of magnetic resistance

Amazon.co.uk
as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

Experience the ultimate workout from home with this powerful Adidas indoor cycle. Well-built, well-designed, and made for any level of cyclist, the Adidas provides superior cycle quality for an extremely affordable price of just over £600.

This light yet powerful bike is a great fit for home gyms looking for a small but reliable piece of equipment that won’t break the bank. From smooth resistance and drive to ergonomic pedal and handlebar positioning, there’s nothing about the Adidas that isn’t made with the cyclist’s best interests in mind.

The Adidas is driven with a strong 16kg flywheel that creates a smooth, solid feel through a direct belt and magnetic resistance. A resistance dial allows you to move magnets even closer to your flywheel drive, making your intensity higher and your workout more strenuous, and more rewarding.

However, the flywheel is also no contact, preserving the life and function of your resistance system. The attached pro-display monitor tracks time, distance, speed, calories, estimated RPM, providing instant feedback on your ride.

The cycle is also Bluetooth compatible for heart rate band to add pulse and fitness tracking. Two way adjustable sport handlebars provide two different grip options for riders, and the premium saddle replicates an outdoor mountain bike seat while also providing a gel seat cover for additional comfort while riding.

Unfortunately, the bike does not have watt/power sensors, so you’d need to purchase additional power meter pedals if you wanted this magnetic stationary bike in the United Kingdom to work with apps like Zwift or Peloton.

However, this magnetic resistance spin bike in the UK does offer SPD compatible pedals with built in toe cages for additional support and an average q factor, allowing you to push yourself even harder and get the edge on other spin bikes in this price range through their additional SPD capabilities. A solid choice for beginning and intermediate level spinners wanting to train at home with an affordable and reliable piece of equipment, the Adidas C-12x is a great magnetic resistance option in the UK that provides quality workouts at budget pricing.

Positive
  • SPD pedals, no-contact magnetic resistance, Bluetooth compatibility, heavy flywheel, fully customisable seat and handlebars.
Negatives
  • Not compatible with Zwift and a few other popular indoor cycling applications and only 12 months warranty.

Schwinn Fitness IC4 Magnetic Spinning Bike

More advanced than the Schwinn IC3 and compatible with Zwift
 out of stock
Amazon.co.uk
as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

The Schwinn IC4 Spin Bike is an affordable, efficient, and ergonomic offering from the illustrious Schwinn brand. This sleek and scaled-back bike design creates an ideal spin experience, generating endless high-energy high-intensity rides that are customizable and personalized for every rider. Priced at £690, this is a valuable investment in fitness equipment and provides a long burn-style workout with every ride.

Built with a 18 kg front-mounted flywheel and tandem belt drive transmission, this magnetic resistance indoor cycle is designed to provide a seamless, natural, and smoothly consistent cycling motion in virtual silence. The magnetic resistance system is controlled by a manual knob that increases or decreases magnetic drag with each rotation, while the no contact braking power of decreased drag means there are no loud and clunky gear shifts or jerky braking.

Unfortunately, there is a very basic built-in fitness monitor on this bike compared to the one that you get with the Peloton bike, so you won’t be able to track statistics clearly in the dark but with a bit of light, it shouldn’t be a problem.

You can track cadence/RPM, resistance, distance and time cycled, heart rate, or calories burned. You can set specific goals for your workout based on the calories you’d like to burn or the time you’d like to cycle. Thanks to the Zwift, Peloton, and QZ application compatibility, you can track your progress without needing to invest in additional cadence monitors.

It an FTMS Bluetooth connectivity so you can get a quality workout in the comfort of your own home with the application of your choice. The frame is sturdy and the bike is portable yet solid, meaning you can trust this indoor bike with magnetic in the UK to perform at a high degree for many years to come no matter where you use it.

Adjustable handlebar and seat positioning make it easy for multiple cyclists to use the bike in the same space and find a unique position that’s comfortable for them. Durable Spd pedals power you through a truly intense workout. Although the q-factor is around 200mm, we believe it is within a reasonable range for non-professional riders. So, overall this UK magnetic spin bike is versatile and functional for beginning and even elite spinners, providing a lasting drive and spin performance that stands out among the crowd.

Positive
  • Magnetic flywheel, belt transmission, FTMS Bluetooth, SPD dual-sided pedals, tablet and weight holders.
Negatives
  • Can’t install apps on the bike’s console and it’s resistance is not electronically adjustable so it can’t do auto-resistance.

Joroto X2 Pro Magnetic Resistance Indoor Cycle

Sturdy and smooth with RPM reading and magnetic resistance but no SPD pedals
 in stock
Amazon.co.uk
as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

Take affordable, yet powerful workouts to the next level with the powerful Joroto X2 Pro indoor cycle. Sleekly built and designed for any level of cyclist, the Joroto X2 Pro provides superior cycle quality at one of the best prices on the spin marketplace at just over £400.

This straightforward cycle works quickly and efficiently to spin a good workout for any rider, making it a great fit for spinners looking for a cheap and trustworthy spin bike that won’t drain your wallet. From silky smooth resistance and pedal drive to customizable pedal and handlebar positioning, the Joroto X2 Pro, just like its sibling bike the Joroto X4s, is made with the spinner’s best interests in mind.

The X2 Pro is driven by a strong 16kg flywheel that creates a solid and responsive resistance feel through interconnected belt and magnetic resistance. A resistance dial allows you to move magnets even closer to your metal flywheel, cranking up your intensity and turning your workout into a rewarding and taxing ride.

The no-contact resistance and braking preserves your flywheel, making your resistance system even more durable and long-lasting. The attached seven-function display monitor tracks time, distance, speed, calories, RPM, pulse, resistance percentage (load) and odometer, providing instant feedback on your ride that’s easy to read and respond to without requiring a lot of fussing with the monitor.

Thankfully, the magnetic indoor cycle in the UK also has Bluetooth compatible, meaning you can use apps like Zwift and Kinomap to track your fitness statistics. So, you don’t need to rely on third-party equipment like separate cadence or speed sensors. Vertical and horizontal adjustable sport handlebars provide 3 different grip options for riders, and the rider’s saddle replicates an outdoor mountain bike seat and is height and fore/aft adjustable.

Unfortunately, the bike doesn’t offer SPD equipped pedals, so if you want to use cleats you’ll need to swap out the pedals for clipped options or ones with built in connectors. A solid choice for beginning spinners who don’t need the fancier bells and whistles of higher end Zwift spin bikes to get a good workout, the Joroto X2 Pro is a great lower-end option that provides solid workouts at bargain pricing.

Positive
  • No-contact magnetic resistance, RPM reading, and affordable price tag.
  • Bluetooth for app and heart rate monitor connectivity
  • A large media shelf that can fit tablets up to 15″ wide.
Negatives
  • No SPD pedals for specific cycling shoes.
  • Resistance is not automatically adjustable

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1714 Magnetic Cycle

No fitness monitor but great built quality and heavy flywheel
 in stock
Amazon.co.uk
as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1805 Spin Bike is yet another high-performing spin cycle from the famed Sunny Health & Fitness brand. This brand puts out so many high-quality machines that it can be hard to keep track of them all, but each offers specific unique functionality that makes their models stand out and competitive within their class.

This streamlined spin bike provides a powerful spin experience for beginning spinners and outdoor cyclists looking for a steady way to train indoors. At around £500, this is one of the more affordable bikes to come out of the Sunny Health & Fitness spin bike line, but the brand ensures that despite the price drop there’s no drop in quality of performance.

The standout feature of this spin bike with magnetic resistance in the UK is its straightforward, user-friendly performance. Built with a thick 44 pound front-mounted flywheel and a low-maintenance belt drive transmission, this indoor cycle is meant to simulate the outdoor riding experience by creating a natural and smooth cycling motion that occurs in complete silence.

Similar to other top-quality magnetic resistance systems, this cycle is controlled by a resistance knob that increases or decreases magnetic drag with each rotation, while the no contact braking power of decreased drag means there are no loud and clunky gear shifts or jerky braking.

Unfortunately, just like its sibling bike the Asuna 5100, there is no built-in fitness monitor on this bike, so you won’t be able to track statistics like cadence, RPM, distance and time cycled, heart rate, or calories burned.

In order to track your fitness performance you’d have to use third party apps and equipment like cadence sensors to get the job done. However, for simply £450, it could actually be slightly more affordable to just add on sensors instead of purchasing a more expensive bike that comes with built-in equipment.

Overall, this one is an affordable belt-driven magnetic indoor bike in the UK for novice cyclists and cardio junkies looking for a hardworking, at-home piece of equipment that’s as functional as it is easy to use. The frame is sturdy and the bike is solidly built, meaning you can trust this cycle to perform at a high degree for many years to come no matter how much you use it.

As is standard for the Sunny brand, adjustable handlebar and seat positioning make it easy for multiple cyclists to use the bike in the same space and find a unique position that’s comfortable for them. This bike also offers a few different handlebar grip positions, creating even more variety for riders.

The Sunny pedals offer regular athletic shoe utility (not SPD/MTB shoes), which pairs with their ergonomic and light-intensity stride that won’t put pressure on muscles or joints. The Sunny SF-B1714 indoor cycle is versatile, user-friendly, and functional for beginning spinners and cycling enthusiasts, providing a lastingly powerful exercise that will serve you well for years.

Positive
  • Magnetic resistance, heavy flywheel and belt transmission.
Negatives
  • No fitness monitor or SPD dual-sided indoor cycling pedals.

JLL IC200 Pro Indoor Cycling Exercise Bike

Cheapest model by JLL but still comes with magnetic resistance
 in stock
2 new from £199.99
Amazon.co.uk
as of September 21, 2023 7:31 pm

Another standout from the JLL brand, the IC200 Pro offers the cheapest pricing yet on a high-functioning and well built spin bike. Designed to produce quality spin rides made for any level of cyclist, the JLL IC200 Pro provides superior cycle quality for an extremely affordable price of just over £200. The simplistic but strong bike is a good choice for first time spinners and people working on a severely restricted budget, and it offers good performance quality despite being in the lower price range.

The IC400 is driven with a light 7kg flywheel that creates a steady and reliable drive through the JLL direct belt and magnetic resistance system. The trademark of JLL bikes, the resistance dial allows you to increase flywheel intensity through magnetic pull using eight different levels of magnetic resistance, making your intensity higher and your workout more strenuous without adding extra jolt to the pedal or strain to your bike.

The attached LCD display monitors your time, distance, speed, calories, and pulse, providing instant and efficient feedback on your ride. Two way adjustable sport handlebars provide two different grip options for riders and offer five levels of adjustable height, and the comfortable saddle offers cushioning and extended comfort during your ride with nine levels of adjustable height.

Unfortunately, the bike does not have Bluetooth or ANT+ connectivity, cadence sensors, or cadence tracking, so you’d need to purchase additional sensors if you wanted this bike to work with apps like Zwift or Peloton.

The bike also doesn’t have SPD dual-sided pedals, instead featuring fitted beginner pedals with a foot cage for extra security that slide onto a three-piece crank system. The JLL IC200 Pro can handle all kinds of riders, but it’s likely best suited for someone looking for low-impact spin exercise that’s functional and fun to use. Positive
  • No-contact magnetic resistance, extremely affordable, child-safe covered flywheel and belt transmission.
Negatives
  • No Bluetooth/ANT+ compatibility, no cadence sensors, no SPD pedals, and no backlit reading on the monitor.

The 2023 upgraded version of this standard indoor cycle offers the ultimate workout for at home riders looking for simple and straightforward spinning. Well-built, well-designed, and efficient, the DripEx Indoor Cycle provides superior spin quality for an extremely affordable price, £200.

The magnetic resistance requires little maintenance over time, another major plus, but doesn’t seem to offer any way to tweak resistance past what is preprogrammed into the machine. The attached LCD display monitor tracks simple time, distance, speed, calories, and pulse data, while the attached phone holder securely holds mobile devices and equips simultaneous exercise and entertainment.

Two way adjustable sport handlebars provide two different grip options for riders, and the comfortable saddle replicates an outdoor mountain bike seat, designed with your comfort in mind and easily adjustable in all directions.

The bike does not offer Bluetooth or ANT+ compatibility, nor does it track cadence, so you’d need to purchase additional sensors if you wanted this bike to work with apps like Zwift or Peloton. The bike features functional but not SPD compatible pedals that have built in toe cages for additional support, allowing you to feel even more supported while you ride. DripEx provides basic spin exercise at a fantastic price, creating a simple and straightforward ride that’s tailored to your needs and good for beginning riders.

Positive
  • Silent and no maintenance magnetic resistance, belt, and affordable price tag.
Negatives
  • No Bluetooth/ANT+ compatibility, no backlit or RPM reading and no SPD pedals.

What is a magnetic resistance spin bike?

best spin bikes with magnetic resistance

Magnetic spin bike is an exercise bike that has a shape similar to that of a road racing bikes. But, unlike a road bike that can be used outdoors and indoors, magnetic spin bikes are stationary and designed specifically for indoor exercise. Magnetic spin bikes use magnets to create resistance and they are used at home and in studio cycling classes to do cardio workouts and improve endurance and outdoor rides.

Although magnetic resistance spinning bikes can be a great addition to any home gym in the United Kingdom, they only do leg workout unlike elliptical machines or rowers. What makes magnetic spinning exercise bikes really popular in the UK is their compact design.

Unlike many other cardio fitness equipment such as treadmills, magnetic spin bikes take very little space and perfect for small apartment in the UK. Aside from the compact size, these spinning workout bikes allow micro adjustments. This means a spin bike can be adjusted to be used by riders of different heights in a family. What is the difference between friction and magnetic spin bikes?

The two main differences between friction and magnetic spin bikes is noise and maintenance. Magnetic resistance spin bikes make very little noise compared to friction bikes. Magnetic spin bikes also require less maintenance compare to friction spin bikes.

On top of that, magnetic spin bikes in the UK are smoother and feel more like road bikes that frictions resistance spin bikes. That said, friction indoor bikes allow full control over resistance intensity while magnetic indoor cycles allow less control over resistance intensity.

What to consider when choosing a magnetic spin bike in the UK?

spin bike buying guide

There are several features and criteria that you should look for when searching for spin bikes. Although these may look like small details, they are very important to keep in mind next time you come across magnetic resistance spin bike reviews in the United Kingdom.

Don’t overlook these spin bike considerations because they can determine how ergonomic and effective the next indoor cycling bike with magnetic resistance you are buying.

To avoid regrets and disappointments, here is a list of features check to consider before investing in any indoor exercise bikes with magnetic resistance in the UK.

It would be great to physically check these features when buying the best magnetic resistance stationary bike, but you can also review these features digitally.

Without further ado, here are some of the details that you should observe when trying to find the best indoor cycling bike with magnetic resistance in the UK market.

Bike Transmission System:

spin bike drive systems

The transmission is the part of the indoor bike in charge of transmitting movement exerted on the pedals to the inertia wheel. It is like the chain of a conventional bike or the strap of the car. We can find two different types of transmission:

Chain driven system –

spin bike chain drive

It’s as close to road bike as it gets in terms of feel when you are on the bike. It also transmits 100% power because there is no slipping or jerky move.

However, chain drive magnetic spin bikes require maintenance, frequent adjusting, lubing, and cleaning. They are also noisier than the magnetic resistance belt drive spin bikes in the UK and I wouldn’t recommend them for indoor use.

Poly-V Belt driven system –

spin bike poly-v belt drive

This type of transmission is very quiet and provides smoother pedal stroke especially when it’s on a magnetic spin bike. It also has less maintenance than chain transmission.

But it ultimately wears out with use and you might need to change it after a couple of years depending on the quality. Some Schwinn exercise bike with magnetic resistance in the UK come with up to 10 year belt warranty.

Toothed Belt driven system –

Carbon toothed belt Drive

This is by far the best type of transmission system that can be found in some magnetic spin bikes in the United Kingdom.

This drive system makes a little more sound than poly-v belt system but still less noise than chain drive. There is no jerky move when you do high intensity out of the saddle spinning workout with carbon aka toothed belt driven magnetic spin bikes.

Spin Bike Flywheel:

spin bike flywheel weight and size explained

Spin bike flywheel weight is the most essential factor to consider and you must not overlook when buying a magnetic spinning bike in the UK. Flywheel is the part that you see that turns when you pedal the spinning exercise bike.

It is either made of steel or aluminum, placed at the back or front of the spin bike. A spin bike flywheel can weigh between 8 pounds to 55 pounds. Usually the lighter flywheels are aluminium while the heavier flywheels are steel.

Flywheel weight can affect the inertia and the amount of resistance to pedaling. When flywheel start spinning, the weight helps to accumulate more or less kinetic energy.

Exercise bike flywheel weight is also responsible for providing a natural cycling feeling similar to what you experience when you are riding on a conventional road bike.

Generally speaking, the heavier the flywheels give more resistance, better pedal stroke and smoothness when pedaling, ,ore intense indoor cycling training possibility, and of course the higher the price of the magnetic spinning bike in the UK. Here is a breakdown of what you should expect from spin bike flywheel.

5-10 kgs flywheel –

lightweight flywheel

Spinning bikes that come with lighter flywheels, often don’t provide much resistance or the greatest pedal stroke. But they certain advantages too.

The light weight flywheel requires less strength to pedal the bike. Therefore, a magnetic indoor bike with light flywheel is ideal for rehabilitation therapy or weight loss.

They are budget magnetic belt drive spin bikes designed to perform low-intensity training. As you can see, they are the cheapest magnetic spinning bikes in the UK in 2023.

Another reason you may want to consider a budget magnetic spin bike with lightweight flywheel under 10 kgs is the transportation. You can easily move them from one room to another room without hurting your back.

But generally, I do not recommend buying an indoor bike that has a flywheel under 10 kgs. Especially if you are trying to ride indoors to improve outdoor cycling performance.

Spin bikes with lightweight flywheel should be considered if you are buying the exercise bike as a gift for users above 60 years of age and those who need little resistance due to injury or physical limitation.

From our UK picked magnetic spin bike review, examples of this include the JLL IC200 indoor bike and Dripex magnetic indoor cycling bike.

10-15 kgs flywheel –

Sunny ASUNA 6100 flywheel

Most of magnetic resistance exercise bikes in the UK market come with flywheels under 15 kgs. Some of the most famous bikes like Nordictrack S22i that I added to this UK-based magnetic resistance exercise bike reviews have a flywheel under 15 kgs.

This an ideal weight and good compromise between light and heavy flywheels. With a 13 kg flywheel, Peloton bike, the number 1 best seller magnetic resistance spin bike in the UK falls within this range.

They are the recommended magnetic resistance spinning bikes for domestic use in the UK, especially for anyone who wants to start cardiovascular exercise at home.

Also it’s a good option if anyone who wants a magnetic indoor bike to occasionally supplement their workout when they weather is rough or they don’t have time to use their road or mountain bike.

If you have knee issues, you are probably better of considering a spinning exercise bike with lighter flywheel, perhaps one like Keiser M3i.

A few models of spinning bike magnetic resistance that fall within this range of flywheel weight include the ProForm TDF Indoor cycle, and NordicTrack S22i magnetic exercise bike.

15-25 kgs flywheel –

Stages-Solo-cycle-flywheel

In gyms and cycling studio classes, you will often find commercial quality spin bikes with such heavy flywheels. We recommend these spin bikes if you are in good health and you would want to use them intensively.

They have a robust construction and exceptional durability. They are great for all types of spinning workouts, but specially for high intensity training.

Spin bikes that come with heavy flywheels are also extremely stable and don’t share when standing on the pedals and sprints on the bike. They are considered some of the most professional magnetic resistance spinning bikes in the UK. They also efficiently improve both strength and and aerobic fitness.

But I wouldn’t recommend spin bikes with 20kg flywheels for everyone because they have a bit of impact on the knees and require good strength to keep the flywheel turning. Plus, you need to consider heavy flywheels make the bike harder to move.

I recommend this type of stationary bike if you’re going to do high-intensity training (HIITs). You need this if you wish to work your aerobic capacity for 2-3 hours several days a week.

The Sportstech SX600 magnetic resistance indoor bike, JLL IC300 PRO belt driven magnetic exercise bike, and Stages Solo magnetic belt driven models also fall within this range. I added all these bikes to this UK magnetic spin bike reviews. You can scroll up and read about each of these bikes.

Spin Bike Resistance:

spin bike resistance

This feature allows the rider to adjust the resistance level during an indoor cycling session. Bike resistance is important when searching for a good spin bike in the UK. It’s what allows you to increase or decrease the intensity level.

All the spin bikes reviewed in this article features magnetic resistance. However, to help you understand the different types of resistance mechanisms and why you should choose magnetic resistance system, I will try to explain the two major types of spin bike resistances.

Magnetic resistance

Also known as Eddy Current system, magnetic braking system will allow you to regulate the effort based on your type of spinning workout.

It’s the latest technology in terms of resistance for spin bike. Exercise bikes with magnetic resistance are extremely quiet because in order to add intensity, nothing has to come in contact with the flywheel.

The magnets come close to steel flywheel to add resistance and get far when to decrease the intensity. So, there is no wearing part or noise.

It is the system that is integrated into the highest quality of spinning bikes in the UK. It offers silent resistance and smooth pedalling.

While 95% of magnetic spin bikes in the United Kingdom come with manual magnetic system, the best exercise bikes with magnetic resistance in the UK, like Nordictrack S22i, come with electronic magnetic resistance.

Electronic-magnetic is what allows the bike to change resistance automatically based on the type of programs. They are also very useful if you are into online spinning classes as they can automatically change the resistance based on what spinning instructor recommends.

It’s something to keep in mind when buying a spin bike in the UK because there are only a few indoor bikes that come with such technology.

Friction resistance

In this type, resistance is applied by pressing the a wool pad on top of the flywheel until they are completely stopped. It is an outdated system that has more cons than pros.

Although, they tend to be a cheaper braking system, they wear out and require replacement every few years depending on how often a spin bike is ridden.

Unlike magnets, the friction brake has to come in direct contact with flywheel to create resistance. Therefore, they also have greater wears and maintenance.

Friction resistance pads are either made of wool or leather. Although they are both to rubbish and to be avoided, the leather materials is better because is makes less noise than wool pads.

Spin Bike Weight

indoor-cycling-bike-wheels and weight

There are two types of spin bike structures. Aluminium and steel. Although they are both okay, spin bikes that have aluminium structure are better for home use.

Aluminum spin bikes are lighter than the steel bikes. Therefore, it’s easier to move the bike in the house from one room to another.

In fact, aluminum is around 1/3 the weight of steel. Even though steel is stronger, aluminum has a much better strength to weight ratio than stainless steel.

Remember that it is not a deal breaker if the magnetic spin bike that you found in the UK comes with steel Fram. As long as it has durable silicon wheels at its front that facilitate the tranportation.

A few top-notch indoor bikes that I can think of with aluminium frame are Stages indoor bikes and Schwinn magnetic resistance spin bikes, especially the AC Performance Plus models.

User height and weight capacity

Peloton user height capacity

If you are trying to find the best spin bikes with magnetic resistance, you should diffusely remember this feature of you might have to spend hours to pack the bike and send it back.

The user height and weight are very important criterias when buying a magnetic resistance spin bike in the UK. This is because there are certain models in this review designed for shorter people and some for average or taller users.

Generally speaking most magnetic spin bike models that I have seen in the UK market can fit users between 160 centimetres to 180 centimetres.

But there are exceptions like Keiser M3i that can fit users up to 195 centimetres. As you can see, there are spinning bikes for tall and short people but for average height people, almost every spin bike fits fine.

User weight capacity shouldn’t be an issue because every model that I tried and added to this magnetic exercise bike reviews can support up to 100 kgs.

But if you weight above 100 kgs, it is important to see and make sure the spinning bike that you want to buy can support your weight.

Some of the cheapest magnetic resistance spin bikes in the UK like JLL IC300 can stand user weight of up to 130 kgs which is pretty impressive. Indoor bikes with a range between 100-130 kgs, like the NordicTrack S15i and Sportstech SX600, will accommodate just about most user.

Handlebar Adjustment

indoor bike seat handlebars adjustment

It is important that you can adjust the handlebar both horizontally and vertically so you can enjoy the perfect bike fit. Also, ensure that it has several positions to place your hands to avoid hand numbness during cycling sessions.

Consider those that come with bottle holders in the handlebars. They have more space to keep your accessories and reach to your bottle to stay hydrated during spinning workouts.

Look for stationary bikes with magnetic resistance that come with elbow pads, a tablet holder, and dumbbell holders on the handlebars.

Saddle Quality

how to choose a comfortable spin bike seat

It is important that the indoor bike’s saddle is adjustable both vertically and horizontally. The quality of the seat matters too but it’s not a deal breaker because you can always buy a comfortable spin bike seat replacement in the UK for as little as 30 BGP.

For you to carry out your indoor cycling workout routines without feeling uncomfortable and without back pain, it’s important that you take into account: bike adjustment, the handlebar, and more importantly the saddle quality.

What is the proper height for the spin bike saddle? When you are on the saddle and the pedal is all the way down, you knee should be straight, not bent.

But as a general rule of thumb, the upper part of the saddle must be at the level of your hip, when you stand next to the bike. You can find more information in my detailed spin bike fit article and see how to correctly setup your spin bike seat and handlebars.

Display Screen or Console

You have three options when it comes to spin bike fitness monitor. Basic console without backlit, Basic console with backlit, and HD touchscreen display.

There are also budget magnetic spin bikes in the UK that come without any type of fitness monitor. I recommend them if you want to do regular indoor cycling workout and see your improvements.

That said, every model added to this magnetic spin bike reviews come with some sort of workout monitor. Even the cheapest magnetic spin bike in the list, the JLL IC200 has a console

You should always aim for spin bikes with HD screens. They are more fan and motivational than those that come basic console because you can interact.

Not only you can set improvement goals with a good screen but you can also Watch Netflix shows when cycling or listen to Spotify musics.

A good magnetic resistance belt drive spin bike should provide cadence (RPM), speed, watts, time, calories, distance, and heart rate.

There are a few really good Peloton alternatives that have connect to indoor cycling applications to perform guided spinning workouts.

Brand Reputation

best spin bike brands

There are many good fitness equipment brands that manufacture top-notch magnetic stationary bikes in the UK and have great reputation.

But there are also those that have no brand and simply doing drop-shipping. When you order, they buy from China and have it directly shipped to your home. This means if things go wrong after 30-days, you won’t get much help.

Good spin bike brands incorporate ergonomic designs that ultimately adds up to rider’s comfort, especially longer indoor cycling workouts.

Aside from the brand, look out for design and dimensions too. If you live in a smaller home, choose a more compact spin bike that will fit with the rest of the room.

Warranty Policy

No matter what you buy, warranty and usage guarantee policies are the hallmark and assurance of quality. Quality magnetic pin bikes in the UK come at a relatively expensive prices. Therefore, it only makes sense to have assurance for your money.

When things go wrong unexpectedly within the year of coverage, you call use a good warranty and a brand that stand with their products.

Many spin bikes in the UK, especially the cheapest low-end models, don’t come with long warranties. I advice against stationary bikes with no full or limited warranties.

There has to be a guarantee on the wearable parts, mechanical parts and electric parts. Labour warranty is a plus, but unfortunately not easy to find.

While many magnetic spin bikes on this review have up to at least 1-year warranty, you can find models like Sportstech SX600 with up to 3-year part warranty which can be extended with additional fee.

At the end, it all comes down to the price and the brand. Usually manufacturers of budget spin bikes in the UK don’t offer more than a year warranty.

Pedals and Q-Factor

This is an important detail for those looking for a professional spinning bike. Pedals that allow the use of specific indoor cycling shoes with cleats will allow you to exercise safer and more efficiently.

These clipless pedals will also keep the arches of your foot on the pedals naturally in the correct position. These characteristics will also enable you to increase performance on the bike and pedal harder.

That said, spin bike pedals are not a deal breaker because you can always swipe them with another pair of bike pedals that you prefer.

Spin bike Q-factor on the other hand is really important and not replaceable or fixable. When reading magnetic exercise bike review and comparisons in the UK and ready to buy your next indoor bike, you should look for models that fall under 210 millimetre q-factor size.

While looking at q-factor and spin bike pedals, also see if the bike offers multiple crank-length options. Not many but there a couple of magnetic spin bikes in the UK like Stages SB20 and Wahoo kicker that come with at least three crank-length options.

Magnetic Bike Price – From £200 to £5000

Magnetic spinning bikes are more affordable than ellipticals but they can still cost up to 3500 GBP. The price often depends on the quality and features but there are cases that you might come across an overpriced spin bike that costs £2000 but still doesn’t have the quality or features of a spin bike that costs £1000.

If you decide to buy one of the spin bikes I reviewed in this article, you can rest assured you are getting value for your money because they all provide enough features to provide their price range. That said, I divided magnetic spin bikes in the UK in four categories. Let’s take a look!

These are the ones between the range of £500 to £1000. Spin bikes in this category are good for beginners and intermediate levels but not the best choice professional road cyclists. 2 Excellent models in this best reviews and comparison article fall within this range. My favourite one is the Sportstech SX600 indoor bike in this category. There are all kinds, including those that use electronic magnetic and manual manual resistance. Many include interesting additives such as elbow rests, backlit console, tablet holders, movable wheels, and adjustable handlebars.

Except for elite road cyclists, anyone who can afford magnetic spin bikes in this category will have lots of good time. What sets the cost of the product in this range, is related to the monitor size and the construction materials.

In addition to the technical features I mentioned above, there are a few other bits and pieces to look for when buying magnetic spinning exercise bikes in the UK.

These may not be included with cheap magnetic resistance spin bike in the UK. But it’s worth checking because it will increase the bike’s technical performance.

  • I have came across magnetic resistance spin bike for sale that include a floor mat. Aside from protecting the floor from scratches, bike mats can also minimizes vibrations on the floor and avoid making too much noise.
  • Bluetooth connection is also a plus. It enables compatibility for Zwift indoor cycling and polar heart rate monitor trackers. Don’t sweat it if it’s not included with your spin bike as you can separately buy Bluetooth cadence and speed sensors for Zwift cycling.
  • Tablet holder is another accessory that often comes included with the best affordable magnetic spin bikes in the UK. It allows you to keep your tablet or iPad on the bike while doing spinning workouts.
  • Seat cushion is not always included with magnetic resistance indoor bikes but I have seen a few Schwinn magnetic spin bikes that came with seat cushion. It helps avoid spin bike saddle sore.
  • If a sport towel is included with the bike, it would be nice. It comes really handy during high intensity spinning workout when using a magnetic resistance indoor bike.
