You are probably asking “WTH”! This is not a spin bike computer, what is this? And if that’s your reaction, it’s totally fine because they don’t look like spinning bike monitors. What they are, is a set of two cute and tiny cycling cadence/RPM and speed sensors. These sensors allow you to turn your laptop, tablet, phone, and even your TV into a spin bike computer.

How? They use Bluetooth and ANT/+ technology to connect to any smart device that has either Bluetooth or ANT/+ connection capability. Once you connect your device to them, you will be able to track the most important spinning feedbacks including RPM, speed, time, HR, and calories burnt on the spin bike. After Buying Wahoo sensors for spin bikes, search for the Wahoo app in Google Store or App Store, download and install it on your phone/device.

The application is free and it allows you to track your spinning workout and also allows you to save your daily workout. What it means is that you can save everyday workout on the App and compare the progress every month. But that’s not all, buying wahoo sensors you can join some of the best indoor cycling applications online to compete with other live cyclists. You can even subscribe to Peloton online classes and follow their live spinning workout classes.

There are 4 zip ties in the package, two are for the RPM sensor and the other two are for the speed sensor. Use two zip ties to put the RPM sensor on the left or right crank arm of your spin bike. You can also simply attach the cadence sensor to your shoe. The speed sensor is designed for outdoor bicycle hub which is something spin bikes don’t have. Therefore, you might need to make a modification.

To install the speed sensor you don’t need the zip ties, instead, you will need a 1″x1″ heavy-duty double-sided velcro tape. Stick the sensor to the velcro and stick the velcro to the flywheel. Simple as that. You can also use glue to stick the sensor to the flywheel but keep in mind that you will have to change the sensor battery every 12 months. If you don’t want the speed sensor, you can buy the cadence sensor, for half price.

Note: The speed sensor can be mounted on spin bikes that have at least 1-inch clearance between the flywheel and the fork arm.

Overall this is a great addition to Spin bike. Easy to download the app and attach to bike to get started. You will have your own phone/device with a clear screen while riding. It’s also cheaper than any other spin bike computer. Remember to also buy the Wahoo wireless chest strap, if you like to track your heart rate.

Compatible Spin Bikes: The RPM sensor is compatible with any spin bike but the speed sensor requires a bit of clearance/space between the fork arm and the flywheel. Like this Sunny Evolution Pro Spin bike.

as of June 7, 2023 9:10 pm

Buying the Cat Eye as a Sunny spin bike computer or any other indoor cycling bike, you will be able to track some useful exercise feedback. It’s originally designed for outdoor bicycles but it can also function as an indoor cycling computer. All you will need in order to get it working for the spin bike is a piece of tape and double sided velcro. This cycle computer for spin bike includes a monitor, monitor holder, a speed sensor, an RPM sensor, and batteries.

Purchasing this bike computer you can see your current, max, and average speed, total distance, two trip distances, elapsed time, pace arrow, clock, and cadence information. Spinning 1 hour per day, the computer battery and the sensor batteries can last up to 2 years.

The magnet piece needs to be mounted on the flywheel, and the speed sensor needs to be zipped around the belt/chain guard or on the fork arm. The RPM sensor goes on the drive side where it can sense the crank arm every time you pedal. There are several ways to do this, to be better understand how to get this computer working for an exercise bike, look at this picture.

This CAT Eye spinning bike computer on Amazon is wired. It means it’s not capable of connecting to your phone, cycling Apps or chest strap. It also doesn’t have an internal memory which means you won’t be able to save your daily workout. But if these are not a factor for you, we recommend the Cat Eye spinning computer. It displays the speed and RPM data and its relatively easy to attach to the bike.

Note: When attaching this computer to spin bike, make sure there is enough slack in the wire so the handlebars can be adjusted up/down easily without pulling on the wire. Among the Amazon consumer reviews, there is a photo showing how you can attach this computer to your spin bike. In the consumer review section of this monitor on Amazon search for the word “Sunny”. If you prefer a wireless computer for spinning, buy this CAT EYE computer. Keep in mind that the wireless version doesn’t track the cadence but it’s much cleaner and easier to install.

Compatible Spin bikes: You can use this console for indoor cycling bikes with the flywheel located in front and not in the back.

How to install Spin Bike Computers?

spinning bike computer

You can install these spinning computers on any spin bikes (rear-drive, center drive, and front-drive) as long as there is a narrow gap (depending on the thickness of the magnet/usually 0.5 to 1-centimeter gap) between the flywheel and the frame. And also a place that you can tie down the sensor to it. The whole concept is to put the magnet on the flywheel and install the sensor somewhere that it can sense the magnet every time the flywheel turns.

If it’s the first time buying spinning bike computer, you probably need some help. Often you also need to buy a few extra parts to get bike console up and running.  There are 3-4 things that are usually needed when installing an indoor bike computer. They are listed down below but you don’t have to buy the magnets, velcros and cable ties right now. You can buy them from your local store if they are needed. I also added two videos to help you better understand how to install a spinning computer.

Videos of adding a spin bike computer and also a video of adding an outdoor bike computer to an indoor exercise bike.

  1. CLICK HERE to see the installation video for spin bike computers by Mad Dogg listed first, second and third in this top spin bike computer review.
  2. CLICK HERE to see how to install a basic outdoor biking computer on the spin bike.

Extra spin bike parts that you might need for adding a spin bike computer console to your indoor home spin bike. These parts are not required if you are buying Mad Dogg spinning computers.

Phone holder:

When using the Wahoo sensors as an exercise bike computer, you are going to need iPad or phone holder to mount your device on the handlebars. You can buy either a tablet or iPhone mount, depending on which device you want to keep on the bike during the spinning workout.

Cable ties:

Wahoo sensors and Mad Dogg indoor cycling computers wouldn’t need it as they already come with long ties. But the computers that are made for the outdoor bikes come with short ties. These 10-inch cable tie should be fine for all bikes.

Magnets:

This piece might be required regardless which exercise bike compute you buy. Each computer comes with a magnet that attaches on the flywheel so that each time it passes the sensor, the sensor can record the data. However, if there is more than a few millimeters gap between the sensor and the magnet, the sensor doesn’t pick it up.

Therefore, you will need to join two or even three magnets on top of each other to narrow down the gap between the sensor and the magnets. Watching the second video I linked above, you will better understand what I mean. These 3mm magnets are powerful and cheap. Always make sure the tiny magnet is lined up centered on the sensor when it rotates and that they are as close as you can get them without touching.

Dual-sided Velcro:

In some cases, you might need to use a piece of dual sided tape or velcro tape to stick the magnet on the flywheel or the sensors to the fork arm/crank arm. These two-sided velcro tapes are powerful and cheap.

A wireless spinning bike computer is easier to install and maintain. You can easily attach the computer wherever you like on the handlebars. Also when adjusting the handlebar, you don’t have to worry about pulling the wire. The speed and cadence components attach easily to the bike’s crank, fork or flywheel. Wired spin cycle computer, on the other hand, requires you to run the wire through the frame along the moving parts. Its’ more difficult to install, doesn’t look nice and you always need to be careful they don’t get stuck and pulled. Best computer for spin bike featuring wireless technology might cost more, but it’s more user-friendly.

As a matter of fact, some elite indoor cyclists, exercise based on the heart rate.

Bluetooth enabled pinning computers also allow you to attend live spin bike classes online from inside your home. Another good reason that we like Bluetooth enabled spin bike display is that it allows you to save your daily progress on spinning apps and even share it with friends on the web.

Spinning bike computer warranty

When searching to find computer for Sunny spin bike, Star Trac bikes or any other spin bike, check and see if refund or warranty is included. Best indoor cycling bike computers include anywhere from 1 to 3 years warranty for home use.

  1. Hi wanting a price on say 5 spin bike computers. Looking for Rpm , distance , and maybe Watt .
Bikes are fly wheel on front . If we get and are happy with the first 5. Would then be looking at another 20 to 25 more . Thanks Paul

  2. Hi! Do any computers measure your resistance? I usually go to spin class and like to know if I should be at a 5, 10, etc.
    Thanks!!

    • Hi Rachel, thanks for dropping by

Unfortunately, I don’t know of any separately sold spin bike computer that can track the resistance level. Currently, the only suggestion that I can give you is to try to sell your bike and buy another one such as Keiser, Life Fitness IC5, or the budget ProForm Smart Power. You can find their full reviews on our website, they display the current resistance level in addition to the RPM and watts.

If you do find a solution or have any question, please let us and our readers know.

  3. Do the Used Schwinn Fitness AC Performance Plus Indoor Cycling Bike come with Power Sensor and Meter?

  4. I bought the Spinning BIO HR spin bike computer on your recommendation. But when hooked up, the speed is way off–way too fast. A little research and I found out it’s calibrated for their Spinning brand only. Your readers should know this problem. I returned mine an am looking for a substitute. The Wahoo speed sensor is too thick for the Sunny Minotaur. Any suggestions?

  5. Good evening, I am looking for a retro fit computer for my spin bike as I would like to know the distance I am travelling, will the wahoo items show me this?

  6. Can you recommend a spin computer for an old type Keiser grey and orange spin bike. It has a rear wheel drive, thanks

    • Hello Noel, thanks for stopping by

The only good computer I can think of is the Kieser’s.

If your Keiser M3 doesn’t already have it, you should be able to purchase it separately from the company and easily install it on the bike.

  7. i just purchased 2 Flywheel IC5’s. I would like to get monitors to join the Peloton app for live classes. what you recommend? is the Life Fitness IC5 monitor would work on the old Flywheel bikes (Life Fitness made those for Flywheel. thx.

    • Hello Andrew, thanks for stopping by

I thought Flywheel was sued and currently out of business and I didn’t know they ever had an IC5 model but I can be wrong. Anyway, these monitors are not for the Peloton application as non of them have wireless connectivity features. I suggest you check out the power meters we reviewed on our websites, they are perfect for connecting indoor bikes to cycling apps.

  8. In regards to the Spinning Studio Computer. Because it is ANT+ compatible, does that mean I can use any brand cadence or heart monitor sensor and simply “pair” it with the Spinning Studio Computer? For example can I use the Wahoo cadence sensor on this monitor? The idea being that one sensor could be used for both the Spinning Studio Computer and apps such as Peloton.

    • Hello Steve, thanks for getting in touch

We tried it with its own cadence sensor which uses simple ANT+ protocol and it synched immediately. So, I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t connect with other cadence sensors that use ANT+. As for the heart rate monitors, it should work with any heart rate monitor that uses simple ANT+ frequency to communicate.
