What to Look for When Buying a Used Spin Bike

If you are on a budget and looking to buy a good quality indoor cycling bike, a second-hand and company refurbished spin bike is for you. Buying used indoor exercise bikes can be a wise decision if you know what to consider and look for. There are hundreds of used indoor bikes on Craigslist, eBay, Amazon, health clubs, and spinning classes.

But you want to pick one machine so obviously, you want to make sure to get the best cheap second-hand spin bike. To do so, you will need to know if certain parts were replaced or if the warranty and features are still intact. Therefore, before you buy a refurbished indoor cycle, read our detailed second-hand spin bike reviews and spin bike buying guide. Hopefully, we will be able to help you get the best-remanufactured spin bike for a good price.

Sold by

When buying spinning bikes second hand on Amazon or any other site, we highly recommend you to see who is selling them. It’s best to buy a second-hand spin bike from the big names with top ratings. They have the expert manpower and resources to replace all the worn parts with high-quality original parts.

If things go south when buying second-hand spinning bikes on Amazon from third-party sellers, you can always request an A-to-Z guarantee refund from Amazon. Last but not least, if you have any doubts or question, contact the third party seller on Amazon. The phone number and email address are usually listed on their profile.

Warranty

One of the most important things to look for in used home indoor cycling bikes is the warranty. While most second-hand bikes in the USA sold by local gyms and consumers aren’t under warranty when they are sold, there are some that still have a valid warranty. Always look for a long-term warranty. It indicates how confident the seller is in the product and it also gives you a sense of security.

Replaced Parts

Some of the most important parts that you need to look for when buying second-hand cycling bikes are the bottom bracket, belt/chain, seat, and computer. These are usually the first to wear out but if they have been replaced with new ones, you can have peace of mind.

Also, it’s good to see if the parts for that specific bike are still available on the market. Because if one year down the road something breaks, you want to be able to replace it instead of trashing your exercise bike.

Paint

Not a huge factor as it doesn’t affect the performance of the bike. But it’s nice to buy used indoor cycling bike that looks new. Sometimes the retailers disassemble the entire bike and repaint it, which makes it look like brand-new.

Brands

Regardless of what type and model of second-hand bikes you buy, the brand matters. Good fitness equipment brands tend to invest more in quality and engineering.

Assembly

If you find an ex-gym spin bike in your area, you wouldn’t probably have to assemble it. Because most of the time they are already assembled by someone who knows indoor cycling bikes very well. But if you buy cheap second-hand exercise bikes from home consumers or online, you will probably need to adjust and tune your home bike with the help of an expert.

Shipping

Usually, shipping is free when buying second hand used bikes on Amazon. But it’s worth checking that out to avoid crazy shipping costs when buying a second hand heavy-duty commercial bike. You can also arrange to pick up the bike & receive the shipping fee back.

Flywheel

Check the flywheel to see if it’s correctly aligned. Also make sure to check if the alignment screws, nuts, and axel threads are not wasted.

Test drive

This is not something you can do if you are buying second-hand spin bikes online. But if you are looking into your local gym and used gym equipment stores that offer commercial and refurbished spin bikes, you can do a test drive. When doing so, make sure the tension on the bike feels right, adjustment knobs work well, and drive mechanism isn’t noisy.

Used commercial spin bikes

When you are looking to buy a 2nd hand spin bike, we recommend you to invest in commercial quality. These bikes are constructed to handle all fitness levels. They are sturdier and more durable than used home spin bikes. They usually also have extra features like consoles with wireless capability, tablet holders, SPD compatible dual-sided pedals, and racing handles.

Fitness companies selling commercial spin bikes have the resources to properly refurbish and run a correct tuning, adjustment, and assembly. The bottom line is that used commercial bikes coming from gyms are usually in good conditions as they change them regularly.

Refurbished spin bikes

Sometimes referred to as remanufactured spin bikes, they have been professionally restored to working order. This process includes a thorough inspection, cleaning, repairing and replacing faulty parts to meet manufacturer specifications. A refurbished indoor cycling bike may or may not be in its original packaging. This type of second-hand spin bikes on Amazon come with manufacturer’s or refurbisher’s warranty.

Used Like New Spin Bikes

Retailers use different phrases to describe their second-hand exercise bikes. One of these phrases that you might come across is the “used like new”. It means the bike is in excellent conditions. “Used Like New” spinning bikes have been maintained and ridden with care. We highly recommend this type of second hand commercial indoor cycling bikes.

Used Very Good Spin Bikes

This type of second-hand spinning indoor bikes are in good conditions but not as good as the “used like new” bikes.  They have minor cosmetic damages and have been used for quite some time.

Used Acceptable Spin Bike

When buying used “acceptable spin bikes”, you should expect major cosmetic damages and some worn parts. These second-hand spin bikes are usable but might require changing some parts within the first year of use. They may come in original packaging but the packaging will be damaged.

Where to find the best value second-hand spin bikes

Local gyms/spinning studios

There are two options to find used spin bikes for sale, online or your local gym. Purchasing second-hand stationary spin bikes from your local health clubs and spinning studios should be your first option. Because you will be able to manually test the bike, check the condition, and negotiate the price. Buying from gyms also means getting a commercial grade second-hand spin bike which is better quality and sturdier than home use quality spin bikes.

Buying discount spin bikes from your local gym, you can avoid bad surprises and high shipping prices. Keep in mind that it’s always better to buy second hand commercial indoor cycling bikes from a reputable indoor cycling retailer rather than cheap fitness companies. The reason is that indoor cycling companies are specialized on spin bikes. They have more resources to take apart, service, clean and refurbish used spin bikes.

Online

Unfortunately most of the times when you are ready to invest in used gym spin bikes, you will not be able to find any in your local gym or spin studio. That’s when you may want to look for second-hand hand spinning bike for sale online. There are pros and cons of buying second-hand exercise bikes on the web.

The good thing is that you will have tons of options in different price ranges and models. The bad thing is that you can’t physically test them. And if you happen to deal with the wrong people in the wrong websites, you might expose your personal information. One of the best places where you can snag used home spin cycles is Amazon website.

Final Word on Second-Hand Bikes

Indoor cycling bikes also are known as spin bike and spinning bikes are a great fitness equipment for losing weight. Indoor spinning is a safe and very effective way to get in shape, get in a solid cardio workout and tone up your entire lower and upper body.

What sets indoor spinning bikes apart is their capability to offer low-impact as well as aggressive cardio workout. While indoor spinning has a lower impact compared to running, the spin bike provides a very solid workout for all fitness levels! This feature makes indoor cycling bikes ideal for individuals who suffer from joint injuries as well as those who want to get in shape quickly.

Bottom line is that we highly recommend you to try to buy used, refurbished commercial spin bikes. We believe the cheapest way to own a commercial bike is to go second hand. You can get a top-notch cheap second-hand bike from reputable brands for half a price.

And when buying from a local gym or spinning studio there is even a better chance of getting a high-quality bike that doesn’t have any serious structural problems. Because they often replace bikes just to have a new model in the gym. But if for any reason you decide to go with brand-new spin bikes, make sure to check out our best magnetic spin bike reviews or budget spin bikes reviews.

  1. Interested in an used Keiser M3 or M3i, where are you physically located and a phone number — thanks!

    • Hi Mary,
      Thanks for stopping by.

We review these used indoor cycling bikes but we don’t sell them. You can click on the links we provided below each bike to see the contact information about the third party sellers on Amazon.

Great choice by the way, Keiser spin bikes are unique in quality and design.
Note that the Keiser M3 indoor cycle has a limited user height capacity because the handlebars are not 4-way adjustable (horizontally and vertically). If you are anywhere from 5 feet to 6 feet and 2 inches, the Keiser M3 bike should be fine for you. Otherwise we suggest you consider the Keiser M3i.

Let us know if you have any question.

      Good luck

  2. Looking for a refurbished Keiser M3 or M3i spin bike, have any?
    Thank you!
